The first three years of the Diabetes Prevention Program showed that a prudent diet and regular exercise was 58% better for preventing diabetes compared to a placebo group. It also showed that the very popular first line treatment for type 2 diabetes, the drug Metformin, was only 31% better for preventing diabetes compared to a placebo group.
The combination of diet and exercise was better than drugs to prevent diabetes.
But what happened 15 years down the line? After 15 years of follow up, the diet and exercise group came out just ahead of the Metformin group. The study shows that people who ate a prudent diet and did regular exercise, even15 years later, were slightly better at keeping blood sugar numbers in range than the people who took drugs.
Having control over your health is an incredible feeling. Eating a plant based diet and doing regular exercise can help you lead a more healthy, active, and enjoyable life.
